Principal Investigator

Antonio Bicchi is Professor of Robotics at the University of Pisa, and Senior Scientist at the Italian Institute of Technology in Genoa. He graduated from the University of Bologna in 1988 and was a postdoc scholar at M.I.T. Artificial Intelligence lab in 1988–1990.

Stefano Stramigioli received the M.Sc. with honors (cum laude) in 1992 and the Ph.D with honors (cum laude) in 1998. Since then he has been faculty member and he is currently full professor of the chair of Advanced Robotics.
Peter H. Veltink is professor of technology for the restoration of human function at the University of Twente, Enschede, the Netherlands. He chairs the Biomedical Signals and Systems Group, coordinates the research track Neural and Motor Systems of the Institute for Biomedical Technology and Technical Medicine (MIRA) and chairs of the discipline Electrical Engineering in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science.
Prof. Dr. ir. Herman van der Kooij, (1970) received his Phd with honors (cum laude) in 2000 and is from 2010 full professor in Biomechatronics and Rehabilitation Technology at the Department of Biomechanical Engineering at the University of Twente (0.8 fte), and Delft University of Technology (0.2fte), the Netherlands. His expertise and interests are in the field of human motor control, adaptation, and learning, rehabilitation robots, diagnostic, and assistive robotics, virtual reality, rehabilitation medicine, and neuro-computational modelling

Matteo Bianchi received the B.S degree and the M.S cum laude in Biomedical Engineering from University of Pisa, Italy, in 2004 and 2007, respectively and the PhD in Automatics, Robotics and Bioengineering from University of Pisa in 2012. Currently, he is working as Assistant Professor of the University of Pisa - Department of Information Engineering - Centro di Ricerca “E. Piaggio”, and Clinic Research Affiliate at Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN - US).

Roger Gassert is Associate Professor of Rehabilitation Engineering at the Department of Health Sciences and Technology at ETH Zurich. Born in 1976 in Solothurn, Switzerland, he received the M.Sc. degree in microengineering and the Ph.D. degree in neuroscience robotics from the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland in 2002 and 2006, respectively.

Fabio Bonomo is an Engineer with a Master’s degree in Computer Science with a specialization in Robotics and Automation. He is an expert in embedded systems, rapid control prototyping, and the design and development of electronics hardware.

Prof. Dr. Andreas Luft, 41, is a senior physician in the Department of Neurology and head of the Stroke Center of the University of Zurich. He specializes in the acute treatment of stroke patients and neuro-rehabilitation. In research, he examines what stimulates recovery of the brain after a stroke.

Prof. Ricciardi studied Medicine and Surgery at the University of Pisa (Italy) and received his Ph.D. in Neurosciences at Scuola Superiore “Sant’Anna” (Pisa, Italy). Since 1998, he has spent more than two years at the Laboratory of Neuroscience/NIA and Laboratory of Brain and Cognition/NIMH at NIH (Bethesda MD, USA).

Kristin D. Zhao, Ph.D., uses innovative technologies, device fabrication and imaging methods to investigate pathogenesis related to the musculoskeletal system. The long-term goal of Dr. Zhao's research team is to develop and use diagnostic tools to enable earlier diagnosis, prescribe effective interventions for individuals with disabilities and diseases, and assess outcomes.

From 1981 to 1988, he was a faculty member and lecturer at Osaka University. From 1988, he was a senior researcher and then a supervisor in ATR Auditory and Visual Perception Research Laboratories. In 1992, he became department head of Department 3, ATR Human Information Processing Research Laboratories. In 2003, he became Director of ATR Computational Neuroscience Laboratories. Since 2004, he has been an ATR Fellow. In 2010, he became Director of ATR Brain Information Communication Research Laboratory Group.
